Adult Nationals 2006 - New Orleans,
Louisiana
May 27-June 3rd
RUSTYS
60’S NATIONAL REPORT
The
Rustys 60’s team went to the 2006 National Volleyball
Championships on New Orleans with some trepidation.
Would the city be ready to host the championships? Were
we occupying hotel rooms that should have been available
for displaced residents? Were we going with a slightly
under-manned team? The answers were – yes, no and yes.
Although much of the downtown was operating at
significantly less than half of normal activity, the
French quarter and Bourbon Street seemed to be somewhat
back to a more normal level of activity.
Rustys 60’s had seven players – five from the core
Portland group (Tom Swanson, Dick Ellegood, Jerry
Kissick, Gary Pfingston and Squier Smith). They were
joined by Ed Tamas from Southern California and J.C.
Moore from the Denver area.
Pool
play involved 7 teams playing 3 matches on each of the
first two days. The results of those matches were as
follows:
Brasil Master 60 – beat us with scores of 25 to 22 and
25 to 5. The second game was one of the worst games we
have played in a long time.
Sao Paulo Masters – beat us 25 to 15 and 25 to 19. Much
better play against a much better team.
People Against Drugs – beat us 25 to 21, 16 to 25 and 15
to 13 – probably should have won the match in two
straight games.
Just Volleyball – beat us 26 to 24, 25 to 18 and 17 to
15 – excellent match against a good team – could have
gone either way.
Papakoa – beat us 25 to 23, 24 to
26 and 15 to 13 – another very good match.
We
showed good teamwork and excellent serving and were just
4 points short of winning the match.
Outback – we won the match 25 to 19 and 25 to 23 – beat
a team from Seattle with good team play and few errors.
Rustys finished the pool play in 5th place
ready to start the double-elimination playoffs.
First round – beat Spike Force two straight games with
consistent play and good teamwork. Every one made a
significant contribution to the win.
Second round – beaten by Sao Paulo 60 25 to 20 and 25 to
17 which dropped us into the losers bracket.
Third round – beaten by Outback. We had some good
individual play but our overall teamwork was poor.
Second loss sent us home looking forward to a better
showing next year in Austin, Texas.
